In 1901, the Nashville Coal and Coke Company merged with the Memphis Coal & Coke Company to become the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railway Company. In 1912, Tangier Mines Corporation was organized to develop a coal mine in Tangier Township, Morrow County, Kentucky. The mine opened in 1915 and produced over 2 million tons of coal annually until it closed in 1984 due to environmental degradation.
Germantown is a small town in Cooke County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,671 at the 2010 census. Germantown is one of the oldest towns in Tennessee and has been around since 1790. It is located on the Cumberland River and forms part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The first Europeans to see what is now Germantown were travelling downriver from Chattanooga when they made landfall on July 4, 1792, near present-day Lebanon Valley. They named their new discovery "Germantown" after General George Washington's troops had passed through that year on their way southward from west Georgia and northward into Alabama for supplies before Battle of Horseshoe Bend en route to Mexico City. In 1819, a schoolhouse was built in what is now Germantony Heights close to Main Street and it served as a teaching post until 1824 when the first local school district was formed which included all of Cooke County excepting Germantown. In 1829–30 a church was built northeast of where Main Street crosses the river; this became known as First Baptist Church (now Elm Sunday Morning Baptist Church). During Reconstruction following the Civil War several stores were opened by freedmen who had left Union camps or had been forcibly taken out by Confederate forces during that period. These stores soon closed due to high inflation caused by war-time shortages which also limited opportunities for farmers to sell goods raised in their fields during those years. Many businesses did not reopen until well into the 1920s because of continued prohibitionism in America which restricted many economic opportunities for African Americans including grocery store ownership throughout most of America at that time A cotton gin founded by Walter Kellar in 1865 greatly increased cotton production along with other investments such as a stockyards and machine shops creating an opportunity for white men working side-by-side with African Americans throughout much of Tennessee during this time period termed "the Gilded Age". In addition to these positive developments there were negative aspects during this time period including lynchingings (most notably within Druid Hills Cemetery) Ku Klux Klan activities and Jim Crow laws enforced against black Americans living inside white walls or outside areas designated as "colored." The decline in manufacturing activity concurrent with Prohibition created difficulties for many businesses throughout much of TN resulting in shrinking populations while demand soared for goods produced outside America which drove prices up even more among consumers adversely impacting entire economies statewide especially rural ones like those found in Cooke County despite efforts made over many decades towards diversifying our economy away from agriculture

It served as both a meeting place for the townspeople and a parish church for many years until it merged withthe Presbyterian Church in 1992. - Third Methodist Episcopal Church (1865-present) – This church also served as both a meeting place for the townspeople and a parish church for many years until it merged withthe Presbyterian Church in 1992 - Masonic Lodge No 1 (1820-) – This lodge has been located at 815 Main Street since 1840 - German Village Race Track (1861-) – This race track was located on Cumberland Avenue between First Baptist Church and Third Methodist EpiscopalChurch before being replaced by The Gilded Cage Casino Resort which opened in 2014 . From humble beginnings as just two buildings near where modern day University Boulevard meets State Street, Germany Town quickly grew into one of Marshall County’s most important communities! With around 500 residents by 1830German Town had accomplished more than any other small community throughout this time frame!Families who could afford land along Cumberland Avenue began purchasing large parcels “northwest of village” later known simply as “North Country” setting up their homes surrounded by hunting fields & gardens that would remain largely unchanged through three centuries!!! Today you can find beautiful restored trees lining university Blvd..
