In 1870, Germantown was renamed Memphis after General Andrew Jackson's victory at Battle of Pea Ridge during the American Civil War. However, because Memphis was located so close to Nashville – home then also to many white settlers – there continued to be tension between these two cities until well intothe 20th century. Today much of downtown Memphis is still called Germantown because much of its development took place here between 1796-1827 (and again starting in 1898).

After the war, Germantown began to rebound as a commercial and cultural center.
