Henderson County was renamed West Tennessee Valley Authority (WTVA) in 1934 and became one of the most important television markets in America because of its location at an elevation above sea level that made it ideal for transmitting signals from towers near Chattanooga across country. During World War II, many residents turned their homes into military barracks due to shortages of housing elsewhere in the county. After the war, many homes were sold off and used as grocery stores or other businesses until finally being demolished around 1960 due to affordability concerns among nearby residents. Today, Germantony remains a largely rural community with few services available close by aside from grocery shopping or access to transportation on local roadsides. Germantown is a town in Middle Tennessee, United States. The population was 4,826 at the 2010 census. Germantown was founded in 1796 by General James Robertson and named for the Germantown area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The community was originally part of Lebanon County, but it became part of Knox County in 1847. It has been located within Middle Tennessee since its founding. The first settlers to Germantown were Revolutionary War veteran John Sevier and his family. They settled on the east side of the Cumberland River and built a log cabin called "Sevier's Store" on what is now Elm Street near Third Avenue. Sevier's death in 1798 left his wife and three children with no support and they had to mortgage their home to pay off their passage from Philadelphia to Knox County as part of the Treaty of Paris that ended the Revolutionary War. The new county government decided that Germantown would be its new capital, so it set up shop here on Main Street from about 1800 until 1807 when Nashville moved into its current location. In 1814, Congress createdKnox County out of parts of both Middle Tennessee counties, leaving Germantony as an unincorporated village within Knox County only until 1847 when it became one of thesix townships within newly created Davidson County (later Vanderbilt University). During World War II, East Tennessee Valley Authority (ETVA) leased some land around Germantown for coal mining and generated significant heat-affected dust clouds over much of centralTennessee; however no people were killed or injured as a result of this activity despite high winds reaching heights above 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour). In 1963 ETVA sold most all remaining lands within what are now GermantOWN COMMUNITY COUNCIL districts 1-5 to McMillin Associates Inc., who redeveloped them into apartment buildings housing many students at Vanderbilt University which continued until 2003 when they retired after 36 years occupancy; today there are still remnants including a small park with playground equipment next door to Sprucewood Elementary School where coalmining took place just outside town limits back then
