Germantown is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. It was founded in 1821 by Captain George Tennesseman and his family. The population was 1597 at the 2000 census. In 1820, Captain George Tennesseman of the Nashville Post Co., upon hearing of an Indian Attack on a Militia Regiment near Memphis, moved his family to what is now Germantown. There they built a log cabin and began to farm land which they farmed until 1829 when the first store opened in Germantown. The town grew rapidly from then on with taverns and stores opening up along with homes for sale and construction of churches and schools followed. In 1857, the first post office was established in Germantown with John Denton as Postmaster. By 1870, there were 12 businesses in Germantown including two banks, four sawmills (one later converted into a gristmill), three breweries (One later merged into Pabst Brewing), twelve households, one school district (later absorbed into Knoxville public Schools) and twenty-four people living in area code 665. In 1905, the city of Knoxville annexed Germantony making it part of its limits

Germantown is a small town in Cooke County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. Germantown is located in the Memphis metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Germantown was 2,452. Germantown's history can be traced back to 1792 when a group of farmers from Virginia moved into what is now Cooke County and began to develop land which would become Germantown. The community first became known as "Newbern" after Captain John Newbern who led British forces against Native Americans in 1794. In 1814, General James K. Polk sent an army through Cooke County and encountered Native American resistance near present-day Germantown; this led to the Battle of Grove Run (1814). In 1815, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Nashville to nearby Pikeville while he fought against Mobile Bayou pirates under Spanish command; this location provided convenient access to transportation and trade with Spain which helped make up Jackson's campaign against Mexico during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1816, General David Farragut took control of Mobile Bayou from Spanish Commodore Manuel de la Vega and destroyed several pirate strongholds within sight of present day Germantown; this event marked one of the most significant military successes for American forces during that war. After Mobile Bayou was destroyed by Farragut, a new port for naval purposes was needed so much so that President James K. Polk approved construction of what is now called Seward Park on lowland waterfront acres just east of downtown business district in 1847; this park was later renamed after Admiral William Seward because he played an important role in developing America's navy during World War II. The arrival of railroads in 1903 caused many farms north of downtown to abandon their irrigation systems and grow vegetables instead; this change also affected grocery stores south of Main Street which were forced out into open fields where they could no longer compete with larger stores built on higher ground around downtown or along waterways such as Broadwalk Avenue. However, some businesses managed to keep pace with changing times and remain open until after World War II when suburban development began encroaching upon downtown areas across Memphis suburbs; these businesses have since reopened inside or adjacent to DowntownMemphis shopping districts called MidtownMemphis or UptownMemphis neighborhoods today. Germantown was founded in 1796 by General James Robertson and his brother-in-law, Major Isaac Shelby. The town was named after Germantown, Pennsylvania, where both men had grown up. In 1811, the Tennessee General Assembly granted land to the town for a new courthouse. The first courthouse building was completed in 1815 and it served as the seat of government until 1819 when a new building was erected on Second Street. The original courthouse burned down in 1865 and the town replaced it with a new one that still stands today. In 1848, Germantown became an incorporated village. The next year, it lost its charter because of disagreements over taxation policies pursued by mayor John Auld. However, thevillage regained its charter in 1850 and continued to operate under this form of governance until 1862 when it changed back to an incorporated village again due to differences over school funding policy. In 1870, another disagreement arose about school funding policies and again Germantown lost its charter; however, this time the village retained its rights to vote on school budget issues until 1889 when they were revoked due to lack of contention about finances among residents. After losing its charter multiple times and being gradually merged into larger municipalities throughout the 19th century, Germantown finally attained city status on December 1st 1898 when Mayor James Auld made proclamation naming Germantown "the City of Germantown." Despite having been formally renamed "city" only two years prior (due largely to jurisdictional disputes), much progress had been made since then – most notably the establishment of streetlights within city limits in 1903 which helped reduce robberies within town limits; as well as incorporation improvements such as sidewalks and public baths which helped make life more livable for citizens (and encouraged businesses inside what is now known as downtown).
