Germantown is a town in McMinn County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. Germantown is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. The history of Germantown goes back to 1799 when an Englishman named John Nicholson bought land in what is now McMinn County for $10 per acre. Nicholson built a small cabin and named it "Germantown". In 1827, General Nathan Bedford Forrest discovered coal mine gold in the area and started mining. The town grew rapidly as miners came to search for riches and new territory to settle. By 1830, Germantown had a post office, two churches (oneMethodist and one Baptist), four stores, six houses, and 100 acres (40 hectares) of land. In 1836, General Andrew Johnson nominated James Kenedy as Secretary of War under President Jackson; Kenedy's nomination caused great controversy because he owned land near Memphis that would have been taken up by the government if he were elected president. Because many people felt that bankers had gotten too rich while citizens were left behind during Jackson's presidency, many called for him to be impeached. After several days of hearings before a House committee chaired by Representative Amos Kendall (D-Tennessee), no charges were brought against Kenedy but public opinion soon changed after reports surfaced about his wealth and connections within society. In 1857, Congress passed the Land Act which gave telephone subscribers free service on their lines throughout the United States with one exception: rural areas without wires or inadequate infrastructure could not receive calls until 1860 due to budget constraints set by Ulysses S Grant during his first term as president). This legislation helped create Germantown as one of America's most urban towns with its first Telephone Company building being constructed in 1865 just north of downtown.
