Germantown is a small town located in Union County, Tennessee. The population was 3,524 at the 2000 census. Germantown is part of the Memphis metropolitan area and is commonly considered to be within its boundaries. It lies about eighteen miles (26 km) east of downtown Memphis on the banks of the Cumberland River. The town was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1799. The name Germantown comes from the German word "Germanshaus," meaning "a farmhouse." By 1801, most of the original Scots-Irish settlers had left for other parts of Tennessee and Kentucky. However, some newcomers kept their homes and continued to use the name Germantown until after World War II when it reverted back to its original spelling. In 1847, Captain John Cissell established a trading post at what is now called Germantown Landing on the Cumberland River opposite present day Germantown High School (now part of Stonington Elementary School). This landing served as a shipping point for goods transported downriver from Nashville and other points in central Tennessee. Other early pioneers in Germantown were James Silloway, who arrived in 1849; Samuel Kinchy, who arrived in 1850; and Ebenezer Cooke, who purchased land near present day University Park Lake in 1851. One of these men also built what is now called Beale Street between Court Avenue and Light Street—the first such street in Germantown. Kinchy moved his business from his home on Third Street into what is now First Baptist Church before moving it again to his property along Second Street just north of Court Avenue about a year later. Many residents here still retain memories or personal connections with these pioneers that can be seen throughout the community today: For example, there are several memorials honoring those pioneer families that live near or within one mile (1 km) of where they once resided – including Kinchy’s house which still stands at Second and Broad Streets across from First Baptist Church today! In addition to Kinnish’s House Museum open daily 9am-4pm since 1982 inside First Baptist Church building), Beaver Dam Battlefield State Park Visitor Center & Research Library has displays on Scottish culture & history as well as photos & artifacts relating to both sides during American Civil War reenactments held there every Memorial Day weekend
