Germantown is a town located in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1796 and named for General David Germain, an American Revolutionary War soldier and hero. In 1815, Germantown became the county seat of Davidson County. The town's early history is tied to its location on the Cumberland River. A fortification called Fort Royal was built here in 1796 by Major John Sevier to protect against Indian attacks. The fort served as a military post until it was destroyed by Indians in 1800. In 1815, Davidson County was created from parts of Knoxville and Ashley counties and Germantown became its county seat. The first courthouse located in Germantown was built around this time. At that time, the town consisted of only a few homes and businesses. By 1830, however, Germantown had developed into a large community with over 100 homes and businesses. During the late 19th century, Germantown experienced several significant changes. First among these were the arrival of many industrialists who began developing its resources such as coal mining and manufacturing various products including baskets, shoes and clothing. Second were changes in social patterns which led to increased concentrations of middle-class people within the town limits; this change helped contribute to growth during this period. In 1919, local residents successfully petitioned Congress to annex part of Tennessee – including much of what is now Germantown – into Kentucky so that it could be part of the newly formed country known as "the United States." This annexation not only brought new life to downtown Germantown but also gave rise to rumors that some developers had been trying to buy out or sell out all of the citizens for cash purposes – something which still persists today despite no substantiated allegations ever being made against any individuals or organizations involved in this issue
