Germantown is a town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,673 at the 2010 census. Germantown has been home to black Americans since the early 1800s. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson and his troops burned down all of the white buildings in what is now Germantown after they were accused of racially abusing Native American detainees. The first black person to live in Germantown was Elijah Muhammad, who moved from Brooklyn into an unoccupied lot on Third Street in 1892. When he died in 1975, his tombstone read "First Black Resident of Germantown." In 1865, slaves brought over by General John Crain from Mississippi began working on farms around here. By 1870 the area had become known as "Germantown Township". The first African-American school opened in 1873 when Mrs. James Hogg taught students Flemish children from Chattanooga who were attending her daughter's school there. "All men are created equal," said one sign erected at that time which still stands today along East Main Street near where Messiah Lutheran Church now stands. However many Tuskegee Airmen would later serve during World War II and afterwards through GI Bill programs and other benefits received by those citizens enrolled in Servicemen's Readjustment Administration (SRA) units
