The first scopes arrived in Gallatin, Tennessee in the early 1800s. By 1852, there were at least six scopes located in the town. The popularity of astronomy and hunting led to the growth of telescope ownership and use, and by 1860 there were over fifty telescopes in town. In 1916, a new barn was built in downtown Gallatin to house the local astronomical society's equipment. This facility would be used as the headquarters for the Society until it disbanded in 1978. In 1927, a new observatory was erected on what is now University Boulevard east of downtown. This building would remain operational until it was destroyed by fire in 1984.
