Gallatin, Tennessee is a small town in the Tennessee Valley region of the United States. The population was 6,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The Gallatin community began as settlers in 1837, when James Robertson and his family arrived from Scotland on horseback. In 1838, they built a log cabin on what is now US Highway 431. The first post office was established in 1842. By 1861, Gallatin had a population of 227 people. In 1865, General John Pemberton's army passed through Gallatin on their way to Mobile Bay to fight for Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. Many residents served in the Union Army and many were killed or wounded in that battle and Battle of Gettysburg near present-day Knoxville. In 1870, Edwin Forrest purchased 1/2 mile (3 km) of land northwest of Gallatin from John Denton for $500 cash plus 20 acres (10 ha) of corn which he would sow each year to generate revenue for his new plantation business with Andrew Johnson as president Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of Agriculture under President Ulysses S. Grant called "Ferguson's Farm". Forrest renamed it "Aiken" after Aiken County (South Carolina). Forrest also donated land adjacent to his plantation complex including three miles (5 km) along what is now US Highway 494 for future schools and other public uses by Forrest's employees and their families as well as other citizens who desired access to this valuable property which included rolling hills covered with dense forestation with streams running through it bisecting portions owned by Forrest and others adjoining Aiken Farms between Chunnel Fork Road on one side - thence eastwardly flowing into Chattanooga - then northwesterly trending along Chattahoochee River until reaching its confluence with Roanoke River about 15 miles west of downtown Chattanooga where it joins that tributary just upstream from present day Knoxville; thus forming an artificial creek named after General John Pemberton sometime before 1796.- henceforth known colloquially as "Aiken Creek" within limits set by General James Robertson himself.- thus becoming one entity with boundaries determined not only by oral tradition but also based upon physical landmarks such as roads creeks & ponds located within surveyed & mapped boundaries.--thus providing us today with an unbroken record back over several centuries documenting our unique location & history within the borders confines (& limits)of present day Chattanooga

After the war, Gallatin declined quickly in importance as a commercial center due to new transportation options opening up in that era. However, it continued to be home to some of Nashville's most famous residents including Mayor John Sevier and Congressman Jesse Jones.
