In 1840, Francis Bicknell built the first gun sight in Jackson County - a small wooden affair that was set up on an old millrace. Hickey erected the first permanent gun sights in Knox County - a small wood structure that was located on the grounds of the now defunct Knoxville Female Seminary. Thisgunsight was used by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War to aim their weapons at retreating Union forces. In 1868, Wm. Hickey erected another permanent gun sight in Knox County - this time a large stone structure located off of State Route 191 near the town of Goodlettsville. Thisgunsight was used by Union soldiers during the Civil War to aim their weapons at Confederate troops retreating through Knoxville Province
