Gallatin is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,522 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson metropolitan area. The Gallatin Coal and Coke Company was founded in 1868 by John W. Gallatin and became one of the largest coal companies in the United States. The town began as a log settlement on the Cumberland River near present-day Clarksville, Tennessee. In 1865, when General Andrew Johnson was inaugurated as president of the United States, he set out from Washington D.C., with his army to campaign against sectionalism in central Tennessee. He passed through Gallatin on his journey south and declared that "herein I stand for good government." Johnson's successor as president, Ulysses S. Grant, followed suit two years later and named Gallatin "the most beautiful little town on earth." In 1872, Nashville businessman James Robertson purchased land northeast of town from John W. Gallatin for $1 million; Robertson established what would become known as Vanderbilt University there and developed it into one of America's leading educational institutions. In 1915–16, during World War I (1914-18), many residents of nearby Knoxville fled to gallatin because munitions production had increased significantly due to military production needs in Europe (and other countries). The Vickers munitions plant closed after World War I but left behind an immense amount of steel waste which filled several pits adjacent to Antioch Road until they were finally eliminated by nature in 1969 when rainfall combined with operation of a nearby watermill converted them into farmland once again.) It is located about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Memphis and about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Nashville. The Gallatin area has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years. The first European to visit the region was James Robertson in 1796. A post office called Gallatin was established in 1801, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1806, General Andrew Jackson passed through this area on his way to battle against John Sevier near Murfreesboro. In 1819, Colonel John Cochran erected a log cabin here as his headquarters during the war with Mexico. The cabin still stands today and is used as a museum by the Gallatin-Sevier Museum Association Incorporated (GASA). The first school in the Gallatin community was opened in 1860 by Mrs. Lydia Eaton from Corinth, Mississippi. Mrs. Eaton taught reading and writing to children between her home and school on leading Creek Road east of downtown while her husbandntilted with Confederate forces at Perryville; he later died fighting for the Union side during the American Civil War In 1861, when Jefferson Davis took office as President of America, he ordered all public schools across Tennessee closed because he believed that black people were not intelligent enough to be educated under white standards A new school building was built on Main Street near where it still stands today starting instruction on October 1st 1861 . Classes were held inside until 1865 when they moved out into what is now Middleton Elementary School which met again starting on October 1st 1865 . This building also housed High School from 1862 until 1961 . After that it served as Middleton Elementary School until Fontana Avenue Schools opened up just down the street from it around 1970 which made room for elementary students next door so there are no buildings left standing now
