Gallatin, Tennessee is located in the Appalachian Mountains of southern Tennessee and covers an area of 128 square miles. At 1,514 feet above sea level, it is the highest town in the state. The population was 5,793 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. The Gallatin Valley was named after General James Wilkinson who led a military expedition to drive out Cherokee Indians in 1796. He founded what would become Gallatin County in 1800. The first courthouse was built on Fourth Street in 1802 and remained in use until 1827 when it burned down. In 1819, Major General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Nashville to Gallatin and re-established order there after he had been driven out of Tennessee by Kentucky Democrats. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell established a small bridge over Buffalo River near present-day Mount Pleasant so he could move supplies into Chattanooga for his army during the Civil War. After Confederate forces captured Chattanooga on September 12, 1862, they proceeded to march northeast through Gallatin Valley towards Union forces entrenched at Lookout Mountain. On October 2nd Confederate troops attacked Union defenders at Seven Pines then retreated back across the river before continuing their advance up Lookout Mountain On October 10th Union forces relieved them at Missionary Ridge before pushing northward to within striking distance of Chattanooga as part of Operation Market Garden which failed due to bad weather conditions Aftermath of Battle of Chickamauga saw Confederate general John Bell Hood attempt a cross-country assault through open country only for his unit to be repulsed nearintogallatin General Nathan Bedford Forrest advanced upriver towards Chattanooga while hundreds more men under General Thomas Johnson contributed nothing meaningfultothe battle

In the 1830s, Gallatin became known as the "Bible Belt" because of its religious influence. In 1847, General Andrew Jackson named Gallatin the seat of district No. 2 in the Tennessee Territory. The town experienced heavy growth during the Civil War, with many businesses and homes being destroyed or damaged during battlements and operations. After the war, Gallatin slowly declined until it lost its status as an important commercial center when Birmingham moved to metropolitan Nashville in 1870. Today, Gallatin is a small community located approximately 15 miles west of downtown Nashville on State Route 524
