On November 12, 1865, Grant attacked Confederate forces around Uniontown and drove them back towards their original positions on the Cumberland River. The battle marked one of the most significant achievements of Ulysses S. Grant’s presidency and demonstrated his strategic acumen as commander-in-chief during the Civil War era. The community rapidly developed after it became known as a center for cotton production in Middle Tennessee during Reconstruction following the war. During this time period, Gallatin became known as both a political and cultural center due to its role in politics and culture during this time period; it also played host to several important events such as Nashville's first major race riot on December 11, 1893 when white supremacists attempted to unload crates of dynamite into a black church; and its role as home to Vanderbilt University from 1925 until its closure in 1996). After years of decline starting in the early 21st century, economic development has driven growth over recent years for both Gallatin businesses and residents; however some challenges still remain such asrising healthcare costs making it difficult for many people to afford quality health care; persistent poverty which limits access to education opportunities for low-income residents;and limited job resources that have made it difficult for many people to find full-time work outside their homes). Gallatin is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Gallatin was Capt. John Smith in 1753. He named it after his friend and mentor General James Wilkinson (1724-1796). In 1802, President William McKinley proposed that the county of Davidson be divided into two parts: one would be named for General Andrew Jackson and the other for General John Cranch, who had been killed in a duel near Chattanooga on May 6, 1802. The vote to divide Davidson was 3-2 with Knox County being split evenly between Jackson and Cranch residents. In 1830, Judge Daniel Boone purchased about one acre (0.4 km²) of land at present day Gallatin from Samuel Elliott for $300 ($ as of 2019). He built a cabin there which became known as "The Boones'. He sold additional land around it over time to support his family and other settlers until he had an area of . One account says Boone planted corn there during this time; however, more recent evidence suggests he may have raised hogs or also gathered wild rice from the river bottom nearby before moving his farm westward towards what is now Springfield Township." A plaque dedicated by Mayor David Ramsey in 2007 reads: Daniel Boone - Pioneer settler & philanthropist
Gallatin was founded in 1785 by James Robertson. The town grew rapidly due to the success of its cotton plantations and shipping industry. In 1811, Gallatin became a Circuit Court seat for Middle Tennessee. In 1821, the state of Tennessee designated Gallatin as the capital of that state.
