Franklin is a small town in Knox County, Tennessee. It was named for Benjamin Franklin, an American revolutionary and signer of the United States Constitution. The town has a population of about 1,500 people and is located in the county's eastern panhandle. The first settlers to the area that would become Franklin were farmers who arrived between 1786 and 1789. By 1800, there were only five families living in Franklin; by 1810, there were fifteen. In 1811, the census counted fifty-two people living in Franklin; by 1830, it had grown to over one hundred. In 1813, James Hogg settled near what is now Franklin. Hogg was a Methodist minister who had come to preach at Log Cabin Creek Baptist Church. He built a log cabin on his farm which he called "Hogg's Grove." From this cabin, he began preaching Christianity to Indians along the Cumberland River which then divided Knox County into Indian Territory and white landowners could not sell their land to Indians without first receiving approval from the government. In 1815-16, Colonel John Sevier founded what would become Nashville on an tract of land east of what is now Knoxville that he bought from David Lane in exchange for military services during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Sevier named his new community after himself—Franklin—in honor of his home state of Pennsylvania where he had been born and raised. During Reconstruction (1868-1912), many African Americans moved into Franklin because it wasirtship laws forbade them from owning property or serving in local law enforcement forces south of Memphis while black segregationists battled northward throughout Tennessee with similar consequences. However most residents soon abandoned this move when opportunities opened up elsewhere in Tennessee or outside Jackson County altogether following passage of Jim Crow laws throughout much of America following World War I (1914-1918). A post office operated at "Franklin" from November 1st 1860 until May 15th 1865 due to low population density caused by heavy travel for goods necessary for reconstruction purposes during these times period as well as lack of railroads making transportation more expensive than it already was across ruralTennessee
