The name of the town comes from General Sam Houston's retreat here after his defeat of Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. The first settlement in what is now Franklin County was made by Paleo-Indians about 12,000 years ago. In 1797, surveyors found a tract of land that included present-day Franklin Township and portions of several other townships in southern Tennessee. This tract became part of what is now known as Chattanooga; however, for many years it was reported that this part of Chattanooga still bore the name "Franklin." So when on March 7, 1837, General George Washington ordered all mounted troops to fall back from their victory at San Jacinto and march to Knoxville under cover of darkness so they could be recuperated and resupplied before continuing their campaign against Mexican forces two weeks later, most commanders followed Washington's order instead of following up on their original plan to march into Knoxville and take possession of that city. When conducted interviews with residents who lived near where he had fought during his military career including Confederate general Robert Ewell Jr., one can understand why General Washington may have chosen to retire to Chattanooga rather than continue fighting another battle in what had become known as the Third Texan Rebellion (1835-1839). He not only knew that if he continued trying to take Knoxville it would likely result in yet another costly battle; but also because there were already large numbers of Confederate soldiers living within easy reach within Chattanooga and surrounding counties should hostilities recommence outside the city limits. Withdrawing his forces from Knoxville also allowed him more time to arm and train new units so he could fight effectively against overwhelming odds once again Should hostilities resume outside the city walls… In spite of these concerns about potential conflict erupting around him should he attempt another campaign against Mexico City – something which even President Andrew Johnson considered – General George Washington decided upon retreating back overland rather than travel through Mexico City on November 25th 1837 while supplies were still available there waiting for him just beyond its walls… Despite reports published prior to his retirement stating otherwise historians generally agree that General Washington withdrew due primarily logistical reasons; namely lack or necessary coordination between army units operating separately along different routes leading northeast towards Nashville/Memphis… Franklins growth began slowly but surely following this event as people flocked here seeking cheap labor relative to larger cities such as Memphis or Nashville…. By 1840 some 3135 citizens resided within modern day Franklin Township compared with 2600 residents residing within present day Chattanooga Limits…. At its peak population number during Reconstruction around 1870 almost 4000 total individuals lived within present day Franklin Township limits….. Today less then 500 residents currently reside within modern day Franklin Townshiplimits…. Although little evidence remains documenting early settler life or farming operations here post 1800s most research suggests this area experienced modest growth throughout much earlier period…… although not without controversies associated with residential development programs initiated by current occupants
