Franklin, Tennessee was once a small town in the southern corner of the state. Today, it is an upscale community with a rich history that can be traced back to 1795. That year, Franklin became the first town in Tennessee to receive electricity from an electric power plant. The town's first store was built on State Street and still exists today as a museum. In 1892, Franklin became the capital of Tennessee and was home to the first printing press in the United States. It also played an important role during World War I as a munitions production center. In 1955, Franklin became part of Johnson City and remains its largest municipality today. The history of Franklin began with Josiah and James Franklin who were Separate Baptist missionaries who traveled through what is now known as Middle Tennessee preaching news of Jesus Christ’s coming to America on horseback in 1790 or thereabouts! They had been travelling all over North America preaching this gospel when they discovered what then seemed an uninhabited area that would soon become Tennessean Territory! They found land here that had been purchased by Dutch traders back in 1696 but because the area lay between Chattanooga (then part of Georgia) and Knoxville (now part of Tennessee), no one bothered exploring it until after their trip across country! So they just started building up some little huts on leased land which they called “The Springs” – meaning water source – until some other Baptists came over from Kentucky/Tennessee during earliest days of Methodism & built up what we know today as First Baptist Church…Now you know where all those murky bodies seen under bridges near interstate 24 come from 😂
Franklin was founded in 1796 by Benjamin Franklin and his wife, Esther. The city was named after the then-new nation's first president, James K. Polk. In 1811, a tornado struck the Franklin area and damaging winds killed twenty people and left more than one hundred injured. A year later, a fire destroyed most of the town center while burning down three churches. The following year saw another devastating tornado that killed at least seventy people and damaged or destroyed over two hundred homes.
