Franklin, Tennessee is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Franklin was founded by English colonists in 1765 as a small trading post on the Cumberland River. It became an important military and transportation center during the War of 1812 and became a center for slave trade after emancipation in 1865. The first school in Franklin opened in 1827 and was served by Methodists until1892 when it became a Catholic school. In 1870, General John A. McClernand established Fort McClernand at what is now Franklin and named it for his brother-in-law, General Andrew Johnson's father-in-law, Colonel James Hogg. The fort served as garrison until 1875 when it was replaced by Fort Pillow on the Scioto River near modern Chattanooga. The McKee family began farming at what is now Franklin in 1800 and built their first house there around 1810. They were among the earliest settlers who came to Williamson County from Kentucky beginning in 1765 pursuant to the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution; many Scotsmen also came through Williamson County during this time period (see "The Scotchman's Progress."). The early McGees had four children: Alexander McKee (1799–1877), Mary McIntyre (1800–1864), John McKee (1798–1868) and Hugh McAffeee (1800–1868). All but one of these children survived into adulthood; Alexander McKee died young at age 24 while fighting with General Andrew Jackson's forces at New Orleans during the Second Battle of New Orleans on November 25, 1830. Hugh McAffeee married twice - first to Martha Caldwell Robinson before her death two years later due to yellow fever; then he married Ann Richards in 1834 which produced six children including future Ulysses S. Grant Jr., considered one of America's most successful generals. The surviving McKee children eventually divided their inheritance between them according to custom within their clan background.
