The city is named after the then- retracted Franklin Plan of 1784 which aimed to arm all Tennesseans and make them a part of a common defense. In 1819, the community saw its first steamboat when the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad established a port in town. The railroad also served as a means for goods to be transported from Nashville to central Tennessee. The city grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location at an important trade crossing points connecting both North America and Europe. As industry shifted from agriculture to manufactories and other sectors during this time, Franklin became one of the largest cities in Tennessee. It remained an important center of commerce until World War II when it declined because of military production throughout the area. However, during that time, Franklin played significant role in building local manufacturing industries such as aircraft production and shipbuilding. In recent decades, efforts have been made to revive some aspects of downtown Franklin including restoration work on buildings northeast of Broad Street as well as redevelopment along Elm Street between First Avenue and Fifth Avenue which has seen mixed results.

The town name is derived from Benjamin Franklin, an American Founding Father and statesman who lived in nearby Nashville for many years before his death in 1795. The first settlers in Franklin were white men from North Carolina and Maryland who arrived about 1800. They built log cabins on the southern edge of Franklin where they operated farms and raised livestock until after the American Revolutionary War when they left to join other northern colonists fighting for independence from Great Britain. In 1802, John Sevier became the first white man to purchase land that now makes up much of Franklin Township. He purchased two-thirds of what would become present-day Franklin Township from James Robertson Sr., one of the original owners of Williamson County. From Sevier's purchase until 1828, all land within present-day Franklin Township was owned by Scottish Rite Freemasons - one of which was John Sevier himself - as part of their self-governing Grand Lodge Order known as "The Masons". Until its incorporation as a municipality in 1907, most services offered by Franklin were provided by individual citizens through private households or businesses such as grocery stores, schools, churches and doctors' offices. These services included water supply (until 1901), sewerage (1893), public transportation (1907) and general needs such assemaphore communication between communities during prohibition times until 1929 when electric streetlights were installed across all municipalities in Williamson County except Franklins adjacent rural areas which continued to rely on kerosene lanterns until new light switch systems were implemented circa 1951).
