The American Revolution began with shots being fired from cannons in Boston Harbor. One of the first weapons used in the revolution was a musket. The musket was an early firearm thatfired balls, made of wood and metal, that could be shot off a longbow. For example, trigger locks became standard on handguns after this time so that owners could prevent their guns from being stolen or lost without them. The name "Franklin" is first recorded in 1786 and derives from the Shawnee word "farragut", meaning "a long piece of wood." A post office called Franklin was established in 1813, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The city was named for General Benjamin Franklin who fought against British forces during the French and Indian War. He returned to America after that war and settled there with his family in 1786. When Nashville became the capital of Tennessee following incorporation on November 16, 1819, Franklin served as mayor from 1830 to 1834 and 1837 to 1840. In 1812 he founded what would become Vanderbilt University. Today Franklin has many buildings associated with its history including the home of Mayor Willie Brown (2006-present), City Hall (1824-present), First Baptist Church (1813-present), a prison (1835-1940), an oil refinery (1920s-1990s) and an amusement park (1930s). The area now known as downtown Franklin was laid out by John Henderson in 1800 as part of a plan for agriculture development along the Cumberland River valley between Nashville and Chattanooga. Henderson had been appointed surveyor general for what would become Hardin County by President James Kenedy on February 14, 1800. The town site he selected lay just east of present day Dutch Fork Road on what is now Doctor's Lake which then emptied into Carter Branch west of present day Springdale Road/Highway 114B south of Interstate 24W/Upper Cumberland Parkway near Knoxville

Franklin was a small town located in Franklin County, Tennessee, United States. The population of the town at the 2000 census was 539. It is named after Benjamin Franklin, an American Founding Father and first U.S. President. The town was founded by Captain John Crampton in 1798 as a trading post on the Cumberland River between Knoxville and Chattanooga. In 1811, it became a station on the road from Nashville to Memphis. By 1821, it had become a village with a store and schoolhouse. A post office was established in 1828, and by 1840, the community had developed into what is now Franklin Township. In 1847, Union General Donelson led his army through Franklin Township against General Robert Ewell's Confederate army near Pulaski Heights overlooking the town center while troops under General Averill Harney were skirmishing nearby; when news reached Harney that he had been successful, he ordered his troops to withdraw across the river to Pulaski Heights instead of continuing into Franklin Township where they would have been committed higher up in the engagement. This caused some upset among residents who felt their defensive position had been violated; one resident even took up arms against Harney throughout his withdrawal from town rather than return home empty-handed In 1860, during The Civil War (1861-1865), Franklin sided with Confederate forces over Union ones; for this reason, most of its businesses closed down following The Civil War and no new development occurred until Reconstruction began in 1865 which resulted in many changes to local government including annexation of neighboring townships into Franklin County During Reconstruction period many African Americans moved into Franklin township due to discrimination faced by white people; this led to increased black participation in local politics beginning with William Moltke becoming mayor of Franklinsville effective July 1st 1870 until his death later that year After Reconstruction ended there were more African Americans working outside of local businesses such as mechanicshops so industries returned beginning with logging starting again but only lasted for about 10 years before being replaced by agriculture
Franklin was founded in 1796 by James Franklin and his family. It became the state capital of Tennessee in 1837. The city of Nashville was founded in 1868, and the University of Tennessee began operations there in 1876. In 1951, the stately white courthouse located on Constitution Avenue in downtown Nashville was destroyed by a fire. As a result, the current Courthouse Annex building was constructed nearby and is now home to the State Courts of Tennessee.
