Franklin, Tennessee is a town in Hawkins County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. The first settler in Franklin was James Goodloe and his family who arrived there in 1812. They were followed by Elijah White in 1814 and John Dillard in 1827. In 1830, Ebenezer Higginbotham settled there and became one of the first men to own land east of the Cumberland River. In 1837, Franklin was platted as a town by General Andrew Jackson on land that he had bought from Higginbotham. The town was named after Benjamin Franklin who had given financial support to Jackson during his presidential campaign. The post office was opened in 1840 and has been operated continuously since then. In 1861, when Confederate troops burned down Union forces' barracks near Franklin, Union General Robert Ewing ordered all male residents to leave the community within 24 hours or be shot. This order caused great concern among many of the early settlers who were now living outside of their homes with no protection from Confederate snipers. Many fled into nearby woods where they lived until Union troops arrived to escort them back home later that day. In 1865, when America surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Franklin's mayor issued a proclamation calling for citizens to return home for burial services which went unheeded due to fear of reprisals from Confederate soldiers stationed around town (). A year later however, General Jubal Early captured Knoxville and much of eastern Tennessee so Franklins remained largely unscathed as both Union and Confederate officers looted or destroyed property throughout the city before withdrawing towards Chattanooga late that night(). Since its inception as a small frontier town with few resources available to it during the 1800s until its incorporation into Hawkins County in 1910-11 it has experienced major changes including increased agricultural production; an influx of European immigrants during World War I; rapid growth following World War II (due largely to military redevelopment projects such as steel mills); dramatic declines following several natural disasters (such as Hurricane Floyd) which have resulted in extensive rebuilding efforts over many years; and most recently increasing Hispanic immigration which has led to an increasingly Latino-heavy populace while concurrently reducing traditional white resident populations through attrition from retirement/death rates etc.; making Franklin one of only two townships remaining wholly within Hawkins County without any decrease in population over time even though its total size has decreased by more than 50% since 1990). Today it remains an economically active smalltown with a growing Hispanic population that continues Toews concept agriculture education programs offered free OF ALL KIDS ages 6-18

In 1811, Franklin was chosen as the site for a United States military academy. The academy became an important tool for American education and played a major role in building up the country during the Revolutionary War and during the Civil War. In 1861, Union forces attacked Franklin and burned down most of the town. However, some people managed to escape into nearby woods. After the attack, many people in Franklin decided to secede from the Union. This act set off a civil war that lasted until 1865. During the war, many brave men were killed or wounded in Franklin, including John Fiske 5th Avenue Bridge, who died after being hit by a Confederate sniper while defending his town against Confederate forces on October 4th 1862.
