The first gun safe made in Franklin, Tennessee was built in 1875 by the father of one of the town's founders. The safe was designed to protect firearms against theft and fire. It was made from wood and metal and weighed about 400 pounds.
Franklin, Tennessee was founded by James Robertson in 1817. The town was named after General Benjamin Franklin who helped lead the American Revolution. In 1827, James Robertson donated land to the town for a school and library. The first building in Franklin was built in 1830. The town grew quickly and by 1835, it had a population of 350 people. In 1839, the town acquired its own post office and began to grow even more. By 1850, Franklin had a population of 1,000 people and it became an important center for trade with Kentucky and Missouri. In 1862, the Union Army attacked Franklin and many residents fled into the surrounding woods or downriver to safety. Many buildings in Franklin were destroyed during the battle but later rebuilt. After the war, Franklin experienced growth as a agricultural community with cotton plantations being established around nearby Fort Donelson. However, by 1870, most of the farming activity had stopped and only a few small businesses remained in Franklin. With its declining economy and dwindling population, Franklins closed its doors for good in 1975. However, since 2000 has been slowly revival with some new businesses beginning up such as artspace Gallery District which opened in 2007
