By 1830, when Nashville became the state capital, Franklin was home to over 20 stores and two banks; it also boasted two churches (one Baptist) and three hotels. The growth of Nashville led to increased competition for trade goods from newly developed areas such as Memphis, Chattanooga, Clarksville, Johnson City, and Athens; however, Franklin continued to prosper until 1857 when disease caused a large decrease in trade across the Appalachian Mountains which caused trade activity throughout much of Tennessee to dwindle as well. During Reconstruction following Reconstruction Amendments being passed in 1865 seeking African American suffrage within Ulysses S Grant's new America they were able to determine that there were no black businesses or citizens living east of Memphis who could demand their vote so all black business owners closed up shop during this time period making job opportunities increasingly difficult for African Americans east of Memphis although some did open up again starting around 1870s under white ownership until those businesses closed too due largely to prohibition efforts during Prohibition era . The decline of manufacturing in Appalachia during this time period allowed organized gangs like Lucile Ball’s Ku Klux Klan ()to take control over many small towns along with various rackets involved such as prostitution which then lead these gangs into other cities looking for new markets while smaller towns like Franklins saw less economic opportunity because their criminal activities stopped generating revenue that would have supported public services thereby leading them intokellos becoming dilapidated poverty traps known colloquially today simply called “ghost towns” . This lack of economic opportunity combined with alcohol addiction/drug abuse (referred euphemistically today as “ddo”) among many people working class demographics created conditions ripe for social unrest resulting from frustration with low wages coupled with high unemployment rates often reaching 50% or more youth unemployment rates reaching 60%. Aided largely by racist attitudes towards African Americans perpetrated both overtly through violence against them or through discrimination faced firsthand at work or school it culminated into race riots taking place mostly around 1920s where entire districts went up in flames leaving hundreds dead including women & children particularly during periods just prior WWI & WWII when rural whites terrorized African American communities fueling lynching operations
