Franklin, Tennessee was the first stop on the Underground Railroad in America. The town was founded by General James Robertson in 1796 and quickly became a center for abolitionism. In 1814, Franklin voted to become a state of the United States. The town experienced significant growth during the Civil War, with its population reaching 10,000 by 1865. After the war ended, Franklin largely reverted to its pre-war status as a small agricultural village. However, major redevelopment began in the late 20th century and continues today.

Franklin has been called "The Promised Land" because of its location on the banks of the Cumberland River. The community was founded by General James Mazzini in 1824 and named for George Washington Franklin who had served as a delegate to the First Continental Congress. In 1828, President Andrew Jackson appointed Colonel Nathaniel Prentice to surveyed what would become Franklin. Prentice's survey revealed that there were no useful lands available for agricultural growth in the area and so he recommended that Franklin be abandoned and replaced with a more populated settlement on the banks of the Cumberland River. The new settlement was named Columbia after King George III of England who had also visited America during this time period. However, due to lack of support from local officials and settlers, Columbia failed to take off and only managed to achieve a population of about 100 people before it was abandoned in 1830. In 1835, General John Covington commissioned Lieutenant David Dixon to survey what would become Franklin again. Dixon's survey revealed that there were many valuable acres located within walking distance of Columbia which resulted in its re-establishment as an agricultural center with a population of over 500 people by 1840. In 1851, Colonel Jepson organized a group of men known as The Volunteer Army under Captain Alfred Tredgold to help remove Native American inhabitants from areas aroundColumbia which had not been ceded back to them by treaty negotiations resulting from the Indian Removal Act (1830). After months of fighting and skirmishes with Native Americans, General Nathan Bedford Forrest succeeded in driving all Native Americans out of central Tennessee by July 14th, 1851; however, one group remained behind numbering approximately 30 individuals led by Chief Joseph – later referred to as "The Creeks". These Creek Indians continued harassing white settlers until they were finally driven out by Confederate forces under General Jubal Early on November 3rd 1863 following their participation in an ambush against Confederate troops near Murfreesboro. By 1865 most or all Cherokee Indians living east ofthe Tennessee River had relocated westward into Arkansas or Oklahoma where they continue today
