Franklin is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 553 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Franklin has a history dating back to 1837. At that time, it was called "The Springs". The name comes from the springs here which watered much of the area and also attracted Stagecoach coaches between Nashville and Knoxville on their routes through central Tennessee. In 1892, General James H. Wilson founded what became known as "Wilson's Mills" in Franklin. This milling company manufactured flour, feed, and other supplies for farmers in central Tennessee. The mills closed in 1916 but continued to produce artifacts associated with Wilson until they were sold to the Smithsonian Institution in 1987. Since its establishment as a community, Franklin has seen many changes; its post office has been moved three times (1901-2002-2005), its high school has been renamed three times (1893-1997-2008), and its fire department has changed five times (1901-2001-2003-2007). In 1907, Franklin erected its first public building--a two story wooden structure named after Judge John Prentice Cooke--to serve as an courthouse and town hall. In Franklin, Tennessee, the town has been around for over 100 years. The community was founded in 1827 by Major General John Sevier and his wife Betsy. The Seviers were a family of planters who arrived in the area from Kentucky. They started a small farm and grew corn, beans, and wheat. In 1841, the Seviers donated land for a school in Franklin. This school was built on the site of the old courthouse which is now used as a library. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest occupied Franklin and looted its homes and stores. The town quickly recovered and became an important center of trade in central Tennessee during the antebellum period. After Forrest's military defeat at Chickamauga Creek in 1864, most of his men surrendered to local Union forces and Franklin remained Confederate territory until it was annexed into Union Territory after the Civil War ended. Franklin experienced some significant technological advances during its history including multiple watermills that produced flour for local markets; a sawmill that produced lumber for housing; an engine-driven ice cream truck that tours throughout the community; a locomotive parked outside of town hall; and many other industrial relics dating back to its early days as a settlement
In 1815, the area around Franklin was part of the Mexican War. The war was fought between General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and General Miguel de la Hoz. In 1821, Tennessee became a state and in 1824, Franklin became its capital. The city was named for Benjamin Franklin, an American statesman who lived in Philadelphia from 1785 to 1790.
