During World War II (1939-1945), Franklin played a major role in producing munitions used by the United States military; on December 7th 1943 local residents helped produce just over two million rounds of ammunition using hand tools at their local armory alone. The city also recovered from damage caused by Hurricane Betsy on August 29th 1947; entire neighborhoods were rebuilt without loss of life or property destruction due to aerial bombing raids conducted by Allied forces during World War II
