In 1907 a new school building was erected which still serves as the present day school district office buildings. Farragut, Tennessee was founded in 1796 by Captain James Farragut as a small trading post on the Cumberland River. The post became a important center for trade and commerce in what is now southern Tennessee. In 1802, Farragut built Fort Gaines on the bluff above the river to protect his trading posts from Indian attack. By 1812, Fort Gaines had become one of the most important military installations in south Tennessee. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson made Farragut an General in the Union army and he served in that capacity until his death at the Battle of New Orleans in 1863. After Jackson's death, Farragut's place of honor went to John Custer at Little Big Horn.
