In 1814, Major General Andrew Johnson ordered the erection of a fort at Farragut to protect the area from Native American attacks. The fort was completed in 1817 and served as a military post until it was destroyed by a fire in 1859. In 1868, Colonel John S. Roanoke purchased land at Farragut and began construction on a rifle range that would later become known as Roanoke Rifle Range and Pistol Club. The range served as a training ground for artillerymen and other soldiers until it was closed in 1923. The present-day Roanoke Rifle Range and Pistol Club is located on County Road 7 near Farragut Village. It is open to the public from 9am to 5pm Monday through Saturday, and from 10am to 4pm Sunday. Museum admission is free for those who visit during normal business hours. There are several types of firearms that can be shot at the Roanoke Rifle Range and Pistol Club: pistols (single or multiple rounds), shotguns (12 gauge only), rifles (8mm shotgun only), machine guns,and cannons (firearms not allowed). There is also an outdoor shooting gallery that allows visitors to experience firing live ammunition at distances up to 100 yards.

In 1845, John Aiken founded what became known as Aiken's Mills after purchasing land north of town from Ebenezer Aiken. In 1851, James Waddell platted and named hisown villagesite after Commodore David Dixon who had saved it from being burned by Indians during the War Between the States. This village later became called Farragut after Commodore John C. Farragut who fought against Indian resistance during that conflict. The first post office at this site was established in 1850; it was later renamed Farragut Post Office because its incumbent moved out of state when he changed his name to Commodore John C. During the 1800s, Farragut was a town located in what is now Tennessee. It was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1796 as a trading post on the Cumberland River. Commodore Farragut later donated land for the settlement which served as its nucleus. The first permanent settlers arrived in what is now Farragut around 1800. They were primarily German immigrants who had come overLAND from Germany during the fall of 1795 under conditions of harsh military regulation known as Kriegsdienst (war service). At first they farmed their original land but soon developed into a commerical center due to their connections with other settlements along the lower Cumberland River valley. In addition to providing goods necessary for life on this remote frontier outpost they built churches, schools and other public buildings which remain extant to this day. The following year General James Wilkinson set up his headquarters here at what is now called Fort Donelson before moving his force downriver towards Nashville on September 25th, 1800 pursuant to orders from President George Washington himself! This event marks one of history's most dramatic turns – not only did Commodore John Adams give his vast lands south of Nashville back to Tennesseans but he also acted as catalyst for further development hereabouts! For years afterwards traders & travelers would refer to Ft Donelson simply as “the fort”; however this appellation may have been more appropriately given to Knoxville where we currently locate our nation’s capitol building (& adjacent courthouse) today! Despite being encircled by hostile Cherokee & Creek Indians with cannonballs flying overhead daily (a phenomena still experienced by visitors), Ft Donelson held out against repeated attacks throughout September 25th 1800 & finally capitulated 7 days later- thus becoming America’s second city after New York! With so much going on within easy reach at such short distance – imagine how lively things must have been outside those walls all those months…? [-] accordingly Fort Donelson remains one of America’s most fascinating historical sites even though much has changed since its heyday centuries ago!
