Farragut was a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States until the late 1800s. It is now part of Pikeville, Kentucky. Farragut's name comes from Commodore John C. Farragut who won the Battle of Mobile Bay on November 16, 1845 and helped give Tennessee its statehood in 1796. Farragut had a post office from 1825 to 1865. The first store was built in 1830 by James Fenton and operated for three years before being destroyed by fire. The first hotel opened in 1836 by Daniel Boone Hunt with rooms measuring only fifty-eight feet wide and eighteen feet high. The first school was organized in 1840 by David Gossett with fourteen students attending daily. A second school building was erected and used until 1851 when it caught fire due to an arsonist's attempt to destroy it. In 1861, Alexander Smith taught at the new school which he also founded with four students teaching one day per week for three months before moving on to other projects including lumbering and farming while also serving as mayor of Farragut from 1863-1865; he is also considered the founder of Pikeville. In 1865, the town lost its post office when Kentucky became a state and changed its postal system from simple mail service to an express service using trains running between Louisville and Nashville; Farragut never received any mail again although doorman services were provided until 1974 when that service was discontinued due to budget cuts affecting all government services including education). Ferrago (a shipbuilder) constructed two wharves at Farragut during this time - one along US 11 east of town near Fort Loudoun where boats could be unloaded for shipment upriver into Illinois or Michigan; another wharf on local creek about half way between town center and pier G for loading goods onto steamboats traveling downriver towards Memphis or St Louis; both wharves are still extant today but have been converted into industrial land uses such as warehouses or parking lots respectively One street in downtown called "Walking Street" still leads out towards these docks today despite originally having no sidewalks whatsoever because there wasn't any money available to build them! Today little remains of what once made up this historic community except foundations scattered throughout some areas dating back over 100 years! Farragut became an important shipping port because it allowed goods brought overland from Kentucky and Georgia to be unloaded on boardUSS Constitution's dockyards and then transported by wagon or boat acrossMobile Bay to New Orleans or Baton Rouge. The town also became an important site for manufacturing because cotton could not be grown near rivers or ports; instead, it was bought fresh from plantations at faraway points and exported using vessels called "trucks." From 1830 until 1865,Farragut served as capital city for Davidson County before being moved to Murfreesboro due to overcrowding at Nashville's Capitol Building. During World War II, Fort Donelson was constructed here as part of Tennessee Army Command's VIII Corps' drive into northern Mississippi in 1942-43. Afterward, Fort Donelson served as headquarters for all army commands in Central Tennessee until its abandonment in 1966 because of budgetary cutsbacks within Army command structure. Today only parts ofFort Donelson remain: portions close to Murfreesboro proper (including Lookout Tower) are now occupied by Walnut Hills School District while others are used as parkland; while elsewhere much remains Butte Mountain Baptist Church which is listed on the National Register Of Historic Places
