The Farragut post office was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it closed in 1910. In 1862 Union General Ulysses S. Grant marched through Farragut on his way to Chattanooga to take that city from Confederate General Robert E. Lee. A skirmish took place near the post office between Grant's forces and Confederate cavalry; Union soldiers killed about 20 Confederate troopers and captured six more horses before withdrawing without taking any prisoners. In 1865 Union General William Taney pronounced Farragut "a well-nigh deserted outpost". In 1907 Captive Congressman John Hogg was taken from Farragut by Confederates under orders of Vice President Andrew Johnson during Johnson's infamous " screw you" speech at Fort Sumter. Hogg remains Internationally wanted for treason against the United States today due to his role in this event - he has been fugitive since then!
