The town name is derived from the French word "farre" meaning "to trade." In 1802, Farragut's expedition against the Seminole Indians resulted in the Battle of Fayetteville. The battle ended with a decisive victory for American forces, which left Spanish holdings in Florida under virtual control. The area around Gentry was part of what became Robertson County when it was organized on December 1, 1836. It was named after General Andrew Johnson’s son-in-law, Henry Robertson.

Farragut was a small town in Tennessee – located about 25 miles east of Chattanooga – until the late 1800s. The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1819, and prospered until the Panic of 1849. In that year, Farragut lost its economic clout when the Cumberland Gap became available for horses only, and transportation became increasingly expensive. The town's fortunes changed again in 1875, when John C. Frick developed a coal mine nearby. Farragut's economy boomed as miners arrived from all over the country to find work at Frick's mine. By 1900, Farragut had reached its peak as an agricultural center with a population of around 1,000 people. However, during World War II, Farragut went through some difficult times: Partisan violence and rationing made it difficult for civilians to do much business; however, military personnel found plenty of work at Frick's mine. In 1945, after the war ended, Farragut declined rapidly due to declines in coal production and population growth nationwide. By 1970, however, it had recovered somewhat and had about 1,500 residents.
