Farragut is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. Farragut has been home to a gun sights history museum since 1984 and has more than 30 gunsights on display. The museum also has an outdoor shooting range.

Farragut is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The Farragut community was founded by Revolutionary War veteran John Farragut on October 15, 1811. He named it for General James Wilkinson (1756-1824), a British general who had helped punish America for her participation in the war. The town's first school opened in 1812 and soon became one of the most important educational institutions in Hardin County. In 1814, Farragut donated land to build a courthouse and school buildings. The first mayor of Farragut was Averill Harney (1816-92). In 1861, during the American Civil War, Farragut played an instrumental role in Confederate General Braxton Bragg's successful raid on Knoxville. When Union forces arrived to investigate the attack, they discovered that many of their citizens had sided with the Confederacy and taken refuge in nearby towns such as Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain. As a result of this raid, Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered his troops to burn down all of Farragut's buildings and destroy all its cannons before leaving town for good. After the war ended, much of what remained from Farragut's early days as an important community were destroyed by fire: The courthouse (1861), School Annex (1861), Baptist Church Building (1862), Presbyterian Church Building (1862), Post Office Building (1863), Female Quarters House ( 1865), Grain Elevator (( 1865)), Methodist EpiscopalChurch building (( 1868)), Male Quarters House(( 1870)), Masonic Lodge building(( 1875)), also known as "Ferrago" or "Grapevine". "Ferrago" is still standing today - it has been used as a housing unit since 1976."

The use of gun sights spread throughout Europe in the 16th century, with early examples including devices for sighting artillery pieces on an elevation platform.

He is also known for his victory at Buena Vista Creek, which helped open up much of Southwestern Tennessee to settlement. The city of Nashville was named after General Farragut on July 24, 1840.
