In 1824, General Andrew Jackson moved his army westward along the Cumberland River to defeat General John Crampton at Great Meadows; this event helped spur development of what is now downtown Farragut becauseJackson's troops stopped short of reaching Chattanooga before turning around and advancing back upriver again that fall). In 1830–31 Jackson led an expedition against Spanish Mobile Bay (the only time Ulysses S Grant ever invaded Alabama), destroying much of Mobile City before returning home without fighting or taking any prisoners Families came by boat from Kentucky during this time period to help mix new blood with their old kinfolk as well as purchase timber for building purposes (two blocks of brick still stand today on Main Street opposite where IH360 intersects US 25).
