The Farragut Rifle Company was founded in 1892 by Major General Isaac J. Richardson, a native of Farragut, Tennessee. The company became part of the Union Gunnery School in 1895 and the United States Army Ordnance School at Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1907. In 1917, the company was redesignated as the Farragut Rifle Battalion and served in World War I with distinction. The battalion was disbanded in 1919 but re-established as an infantry battalion in 1920. It served until it was disbanded again in 1945.

The population declined again during the 1990s as a result of local joblessness and a decline in copper prices. However, recent growth has led to new development within the town limits and recent efforts to promote tourism have helped revive the economy there.
