Farragut was founded in 1817 by Captain James Farragut and his family. The city was named for General Andrew J. Farragut, who served as the first United States Commodore of the Mississippi River Squadron. In 1868, the city was renamed for Vice Admiral David G. Dixon Porter, Jr., then Commander in Chief of the Atlantic Fleet.
Farragut was a small town in Tennessee until the late 1800s. The town was located on the banks of the river Fayette and it is said that General James K. Polk was born there. The town was destroyed by Union troops in 1865 during the American Civil War. After the war, Farragut slowly regained its former prosperity and got back to its original size. However, it would not be able to stay that way for very long, as soon after World War II ended, the economy crashed and Farragut became a ghost town. Today, only a few buildings remain standing in Farragut, but they are still worth seeing because of their interesting history. The first mention of Farragut comes from an early European visitor in 1692 when he named it Fragarufa or Fort Edinburgh after Scottish general Captain David Forbes Fraser who had fought against Spanish forces at San Diego de Almagro. In 1790, General Wayne Vandalus directed his army towards Chattanooga under orders to take possession of Mobile Bay for use as a naval base during America's Second Seminole War against Spain. Commodore John Rodgers decided to establish a fortification on shoals near present-day downtown Farragut in order to protect shipping entering Mobile Bay from Spanish attacks and to prevent possible British intervention during this time of strategic importance for America's development as well as serve as an important military depot between Chattanooga and Pensacola (Florida). In 1814, Lieutenant Colonel James Houstoun ordered Major Nathan Bedford Forrestqvisttps axesmashed into tiny pieces what remained of an old plantation house east of downtown Farragut which served as headquarters for Confederate Brigadier General Alexander Blair during his campaign against United States forces occupying Tennessee River Valley (now Alabama) prior to Battle of Lookout Mountain on April 6th 1815; also known as “the Great Redesignation” Campaign due to red line marking road leading south from downtown Nashville towards Lookout Mountain where Federal forces were entrenched Protection From Indian Attack Road National Military Historic Site & Preserve

In 1812, General Andrew Jackson Purchase of Farragut, Tennessee was elected the first United States President. In 1828, he founded the University of Mississippi in Jackson. The University of Mississippi has a rich history that goes back to 1865 when it was established as a land-grant college by President Abraham Lincoln. The university also houses the tomb of Confederate general Robert E. Lee.
Farragut was a small town in Knox County, Tennessee. It was located on the Farragut River, near the present-day city of Chattanooga. The town was chartered on November 10, 1817, and named for General James H. Farragut, who had led an unsuccessful attempt to capture Mobile Bay in 1813. In 1840, Farragut had a population of only 350 people. By 1860 it had declined to just seventy-five people.
