In 1840, work began on building a courthouse which was completed in 1845 by Jno.[3] The community thrived during the early 1800s due to its natural resources such as coal and timber but declined during the mid 1800s as manufacturing took off around Petersburg and Nashville. However, it regained some of its former glory after becoming an center for agricultural production during the 1990s through development ofElizabethton Landfill which has since been converted into parkland
