After the war ended, many residents left for new Yorktown Heights neighborhood near Atlanta due to economic opportunities available there. However, most residents returned after adjustments were made to post-war life in America;Elizabethton has since experienced steady growth totaling more than 20% over the past decade alone

The Whites were the first to settled in what is now Elizabethton. They platted the land and built a cabin on the current site of the town on December 12, 1819. The first post office was established in October 1820. In 1830, the community became a county seat under the name of Nashville. The population of Elizabethton grew rapidly during its early years and by 1840 it had reached 1000 residents. By 1850, however, it had shrunk to 100 people due to lack of development and economic stagnation. However, within 10 years Elizabethton had recovered its former prosperity as a manufacturing center with mills that produced cotton goods such as shoes, hats, saddles and wagon parts. In 1865, when Nashville became an independent city, Elizabethton remained a rural township with a single store until 1920 when it incorporated as a city with its own government structure. Today there are over 50 businesses located in downtown Elizabethton including banks (National City Bank & Trust Company), health care providers (Southwestern Medical Center), Restaurants (The Gilded Cage®) and several shopping malls including: First Tennessee Mall®, Great American Mall®, Cherokee Casino Resort & Convention Center®, Ohana Shopping Village® and Old Hickory mall().Elizabethton is also home to many historical landmarks such as Seward Park which overlooks downtown; Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest’s ancestral plantation near Robertsville; Educationally-important Smith College; Methodist Episcopal Church; Tudor-style mansion known as “Bathsheba” which was once home to Prime Minister Sir Arthur Balfour; Steele Plantation which has been restored as an educational complex housing primary/secondary schools grades K-12 along with library services for locals and visitors alike; Griggs Mill where local farmers used to produce flour for refinement into bread crumbs for markets all over America before World War II; THE WHITE HOUSE - A National Historic Landmark located adjacent to Steele Plantation

Elizabethton became a center for cotton production and commerce, and its citizens contributed much to the growth of the area. In 1865, the town was renamed Knoxville after Confederate general Braxton Bragg.
