On August 5th, 1863, Union troops burned down Robertsons home while they were inside because they did not have permission from higher up to burn anything (Robertson 1880). Over time many businesses open withinElizabethton including grocery stores such as Smith’s Grocery and Taylor’s Drug Store and meat markets such as Slaughterhouse No 9 and Heublein Meat market (Fenton 1980; Nolen 2008). By 1910-1911 there were over 50 businesses operating withinElizabethton with an average weekly sales volume of $2,500 (Nolen 2008). Although economic conditions began to improve beginning around 1930 until World War II when manufacturing jobs moved out of town due to escalating costs associated with war production (Fenton 1980), general population growth throughout much of this period remained slow due largely to rural exodus during hard times (Nolen 2008; Tanner 2003; Unexamined Census data available online at
