In 1865, following the end of the American Civil War, "Elizabethton" sailed to Europe where she underwent repairs before returning home in 1868. She served as a guard cruiser until 1886 when she decommissioned and was sold to Frenchman Cie., who renamed her "Normandie". In 1907, "Normandie" was purchased by Englishman Ernest Bevin who used her as a training vessel until 1914 when she collided with another boat off Ireland and sank. She later became part of the British Navy. In 1922, she was broken up at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
Elizabethton is a small town located in Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 1,221 at the 2010 census. Elizabethton is one of the oldest towns in Hardin County and has been around since 1786. Elizabethton is named after General James Clinton who fought in the American Revolution and helped secure victory for the United States. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Elizabethton were farmers who came from Virginia and North Carolina. They built log cabins on farms that theyleased to travelers passing through the area. This early development made Elizabethton an important stop on road trips from Nashville and Memphis. By 1800, many businesses had been established in Elizabethton including a bakery, meat market, apothecary, post office, millinery shop and physician’s office. In 1802, William Hines founded Hines-Ferguson Paper & Cotton Mills which became one of the largest paper mills in Tennessee. In 1814 Samuel Cooke opened Cooke & Richardson Bank which remains a prominent institution today. After years of growth and progress throughout their history, three major fires destroyed most ofElizabethton’s buildings between 1903-1905; however these have since been rebuilt and continue to serve as a source of pride for the community. In recent years there has been much development taking place within ElizabethTON thanks to new businesses opening up such as restaurants and hotels along with increasing enrollment at local schools including ElizabethTON High School which has seen tremendous growth over the past few years due to its excellent curriculum as well as its location close to shopping centers and other amenities

Elizabethton was founded by Hugh McCulloch in 1786. It became a town in 1819 and a city in 1868. The hinterland around Elizabethton is rich in agricultural land and natural resources, including coal and copper mines. Elizabethton is the county seat of Knox County, Tennessee. The city has a population of over 105,000 people as of 2019. The area now known as Elizabethton was first settled by Hugh McCulloch in 1786. He named it after his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Sayers, who had been born in Ireland some years earlier. In 1819, the town was renamed for General James Ketchum (1763-1824), one of the main combatants during the War of 1812. Ketchum had helped to win that war for the United States and he was posthumously awarded an award of $10,000 dollars by President James K Polk (1829-1893). In 1865, when Tennessee became a state within the Union, Elizabethton became its capital. It retained that status until 1974 when it moved to Memphis due to budget cuts at the state government level. The economy of Elizabethton relies heavily on agriculture and services such as education and health care; however, there are also increasing efforts being made to develop the local industry base through trade deals with foreign countries and increased investment into technology companies since 2016.
