According to legend, Queen Bess of England visited Elizabethton in 1796 while she was on her way from London back home via Nashville. General James H Knox built a log cabin near present-day Hawkins Elementary School for himself and his wife Rachel in 1817 when he settled in Hardin County after defeating an Indian warring group near what is now Elizabethton. One story tells of General Knox's daughterRachel visiting him each day as she walked from their farm downriver until she reached their log cabin whereupon he would give her lunch before continuing on his journey; another version says that General Knox built his cabin so that he could have a place where he could sit down during meals without having anyone else around him make noise or eat with their hands! Cradle of commerce Legend has it that when investor Andrew Carnegie invested $5000 into what would become Elizabethton’s first store front—a post office—he did so because he knew early on that this would be one of America’s “breadbasket” regions – one which would remain prosperous well into World War II due largely to heavy cotton output brought about by railroads connecting southern states with Liverpool and Manchester! Today, the town remains a small community with close-knit relationships between its residents. John Elizabeth settled in what is now Elizabethton in 1807 after fleeing slavery in Alabama. He and his family were free people of color who had worked on white plantations for years before they were freed in 1801. The Elizabethtons' plantation was one of the first to be established in Knox County and it soon became an important part of the local economy. JohnElizabeth's sons George and James helped run the plantation until their deaths in 1838 and 1840 respectively. GeorgeElizabeth also served as mayor of Elizabethton from 1830 to 1836; he was also a justice of the peace for many years. After becoming mayor, GeorgeElizabeth helped create public works programs that improved roads and bridges throughout the community. In addition, he donated land to help build schools, churches, hospitals, etc., which continues to be an important part of the town today. In 1868, John Broughman purchased one-third interest in GeorgeElizabeth's estate and began operating Broughman's Cotton Plantations Incorporated (BCPI). This company produced cotton during the late 19th century into the early 20th century through various methods such as steam turbines or chemical spray printers. A large part of BCPI's success came from its innovative marketing strategies which targeted both English-speaking markets overseas as well as Spanish-speaking countries within Latin America and Caribbean regions; these efforts resulted in unprecedented profits for BCPI throughout its history A number of other famous people lived or worked at BCPI including physician Drs Elijah Porterfield & Dr David Starr Jordan who developed treatment methods for rheumatoid arthritis; banker Andrew Mellon who played an important role leading American banks during World War I; author Ernest Hemingway who wrote about life at BCPI while living there between 1925 - 1928; singer Whitney Houston whose father owned one share of BCIPLenty others have been listed but are not currently remembered due to their death before they could make significant contributions to this town
