Elizabethton is a town in Greene County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,031 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga-Tullahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Elizabethton was first settled by families from Virginia in 1796 and became a town on December 26, 1802. On January 10, 1807, the town was named for British general Lord Cornwallis after he defeated an American force at Battle of Yorktown. The first store in Elizabethton opened on December 26, 1802. A post office called Elizabethton had been established in 1800. In 1814, the name of the town was changed to honor General Robert E. Lee during his unsuccessful campaign for Ulysses S. Grant’s Distinguished Service Medal (DSM). The first school in Elizabethton was built on what is now Elm Street and taught children until 1861 when it moved to what is now Main Avenue. In 1830 John Hargrave donated land for a church which served both Congregational and Baptist churches until 1860 when it bought out those churches' respective congregations and disbanded them into one congregation under the name “Church of Christ” across from present day First Baptist Church building on Elm Street which still stands today as a contributing structure to the community center complex that recently replaced its original white frame building constructed in 1907-1909 On April 14th 1865 Confederate General A C Pembert surrendered at Appomattox Court House near Elizabethton after four years of fighting against Union forces including much damage done to homes and farms throughout central Greene County A large brick home located just east of current day Second Baptist Church lot on Highways 68 & 71 used as military barracks during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign where over 12000 soldiers were quartered has been restored with funds provided by Mrs Dona Barbera who resides adjacent to property Elizabethton Historical Society
