One of the earliest optical accessories companies in Elizabethton, Tennessee was H.W. Rives & Sons. The company was founded in 1885 by Harry W. Rives and his brother-in-law Dr. John Crenshaw. They were both graduates of Vanderbilt University with doctorates in mathematics and physics. After working for several other companies, they started their own business in 1892 selling glass and plastic lenses, binoculars, microscopes, telescopes and other instruments to farmers,achers and scientists throughout the United States and Canada. In 1915 they opened a second store in Chattanooga which became known as the " Mecca of optics." This store was dedicated to helping students learn about optics from top experts in the field along with providing equipment for research purposes including a 16 inch telescope (later upgraded to a 30 inch telescope). In 1954 HWR merged with Union Optics Corporation which had been founded by two brothers - Clyde Nunn and Emmett O'Neill - during World War II as part of the American Optical Society's effort to increase optical production within the United States during wartime shortages caused by the war effort alone! At Union Optics Corporation we produced high quality optics for many years until our bankruptcy in 1995 brought an end to our optical legacy! In honor of our past we have renamed one of our products - "UnionOpticalCameo" - in tribute to these gentlemen who helped make Elizabethton one of America's leading economic communities during its early days!

The company produced a variety of devices such as microscopes, telescopes, and binoculars. In 1912, the company moved its operations to new facilities in downtown Elizabethton and continued to produce high-quality optical equipment until it ceased production in 1978.
Elizabethton is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County. Elizabethton is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Springfield Combined statistical area. The community was founded by Scotsmen fleeing religious persecution in Scotland in 1807. The first settler was James Williamson, who arrived in 1810 and named his land Elizabethtown after his wife, Elizabeth Bainbridge Williamson (1782–1854). By 1821, there were 10 families living here. In 1830, William Ladd moved to Elizabethtown from Lebanon and started a gristmill on the Cumberland River. He also built a house which still stands today as the only large structure located within Elizabethton limits dating back to that time frame. In 1840s and 1850s manyElizabethton residents had their businesses established such as storekeepers John Tuggle and Isaac Shearer who operated stores on Broadway Street between Main and Second Streets; harnessers Wm Henson and John Neely; tavern keeper Elijah Hogg (established 1851); blacksmith shop/forge operator George Stephenson; wagon maker James Coker (1852) among others During this time period much of what we now know about Elizabethton comes from personal letters, memoirs or newspaper articles written by those who lived there during that time period

Today, Elizabethton remains an important center for commerce and culture within Hardin County while also providing opportunities for outdoor recreation including fishing, hunting, Picnicking/Boating/Fishing/Hiking/Cycling/Running/Swimming etc., making it one of America's most popular tourist destinations during summer months!
