Elizabethton is a small town in Hamilton County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Elizabethton is known for its historic district that includes the General Knoxville Arsenal and the old Colonel John Sevier House. The area now known as Elizabethton was first settled by Scots-Irish settlers who came to what is now Hamilton County in 1814. They named their new home "New Edinburgh" after their homeland of Scotland. The area became a trading post called Brownsville before becoming Elizabethton in 1827 when Augustus F., Jr., an American merchant, purchased land here from James Robertson. In 1859, Colonel John Sevier bought 640 acres (250 hectares) south of Elizabethton from George Covington and donated it to the community as a gift in memory of his wife SallyAnn Sevier Knox (1801-1868). SallyAnn had been born near Georgetown, Kentucky, to parents who were Baptist missionaries sent there to proselytize among the native Creek people. When she married Colonel Sevier, he became her guardian and mining magnate. In 1865 he sold additional land east of Elizabethton to form Knoxville Mines National Park which remains one of America's largest open-pit mines today.
