The name "Elizabethton" was given to it by General James Wilkinson, who led an American military expedition against Creek Indians in 1796. In 1815 John Ladd became the first white settler in what would become Elizabethton when he purchased land along the Cumberland River from Creek Indians for $5 per acre. At this time there were only a few hundred people living within miles of Knoxville or Chattanooga; however, Ladd saw potential for development in this virgin land and began planning its future growth. He erected buildings such as log gristmills, a courthouse (1816), schoolhouse (1819), storehouses (1820), depot (1821) and mill (1822). In 1840 Nathaniel Hawthorne settled nearpresent-day Hawkinsville after purchasing property from Lauderdale County commissioners for $2 per acre Hawkinsville became one of the early planned communities within Elizabethton due to its location on two main transportation arteries-the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad through which goods moved south to downtown Memphis and then east to Knoxville In 1865 cotton farmer Andrew Johnson founded Johnson's Mills alongside present day Hawkinsville following his purchase of five hundred acres adjacent to Walton Lake which he used for farming purposes By 1870 there were over 2,000 residents living within minutes of downtown Springfield orMemphis On July 15th 1870 William Aiken announced that he had purchased 3200 acres adjoining Springdale plantation northeast of Elizabethtown for $30 per acre This gave rise to speculation that Aiken might establish an agricultural colony similar to those established by George Washington Carver near Savannah Georgia among others However nothing came of this idea but interest died down soon after due to financial limitations
