Elizabethton is a small town in the extreme south-central region of Tennessee, nestled on the banks of the Cumberland River. The population was 2,493 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Elizabethton is located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of downtown Memphis and 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of Nashville. The town was founded in 1835 by John Boon as a stop on the road between Knoxville and Chattanooga. The name "Elizabethton" probably came from an incident that took place there in 1836 when General Andrew Jackson's army stopped to rest during its way to Battle Creek, Michigan. A woman named Elizabeth ran into the camp with some goods she had been carrying and asked for help getting them back to her home in Chattanooga. Jackson ordered his men not to let her go, so she was forced to hand over everything she had before being taken into custody and brought back to Elizabethton where she were set free. In 1865, after Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Elizabethton became a Uniontown under Union control. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, Elizabethton reverted back to Confederate hands until it was captured by Union forces during World War II and drove out of town by General George Silliman After World War II, Elizabethton experienced rapid growth thanks to several oil discoveries within its boundaries such as those made near present day Pennington County and Springdale County which led to significant development including new shopping malls, restaurants, schools and other businesses that have continued through the years; however much progress has also been made against tearing down old buildings which still stands in many parts of town despite objections from many residents who feel that these structures are integral historical elements that should not be destroyed without first considering their impact on local neighborhoods as well as cultural values associated with those buildings

Elizabethton is a small town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the Elizabeth River which flows through it. The town was founded in 1811 by James Robertson and named for his daughter Elizabeth. It was incorporated as a village in 1831. Elizabethton became an independent municipality in 1907 and again became an unincorporated community in 1959. The first store on Main Street opened in 1811 and served as the center of life for the settlement until1873 when a school was built to serve the community. After that, most economic activity took place around the school or around farmers who rented land to tourists or service companies such as post office, hotel, grocery stores, and blacksmiths during different seasons. In 1907, Elizabethton joined forces with nearby Chattanooga to form what would become known as "The Three Cities." This merger allowed for more efficient transportation within their city limits and helped increase tourism since people could now go see all of Chattanooga without having to leave their homes each time they wanted to visit one of its historic sites. In 1959, after many years of decline due tobrain drain (a phenomena where young people move away from jobs or cities for opportunities elsewhere),Elizabethton experienced its largest growth ever when it became part of Knox County's School District #1 under then-District Superintendent Donnie Wright II. This change led to new businesses being established throughout the district including restaurants, retail outlets such as convenience stores and department stores while also creating new opportunities for citizens to get involved with local government through elected officials such as streetlights being changed or infrastructure projects like expanding public transportation into downtown Elizabethton Today much has changed since 1960; however there are still many residents who live here unchanged including those who continue settingthe pace for growth both inside and outsideoftheSchool District -pioneering entrepreneurs such asDroneBargainzandApplebeesandkosherDeli
Elizabethton was founded in 1821 by General James K. Polk, who served as the 10th U.S. president and a member of the Tennessee Supreme Court. The town became an important commercial center after it became known for its cotton mills, which produced linen fabrics for export. Elizabethton also developed into a manufacturing town with a heavy focus on oil production and other industrial endeavors during the late 19th century. In 1916, Elizabethton was renamed to honor General Hardin Hargrave Ewing after he played an important role in helping to secure passage of the 16-year old World War I Victory Act that created the United States Armed Forces
