However, many residents supported Reconstruction because they felt that African Americans should have same rights as other white Tennesseans under new government regulations enforced by federal agents known as "the Angelenos." During this time period many stores and businesses closed or changed hands multiple times before finally closing down altogether due to discriminatory practices against black customers by some business owners within Elizabethton during this time period
Elizabethton was founded in 1871 by John W. Elizabeth and his wife, the former Fannie Britton. The community was named after Elizabeth, the youngest daughter of General Andrew Johnson. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Tennessee River, and by 1888 it had a population of 2,500 residents. In 1902, Elizabethton became an incorporated town. The town continued to grow until the early 1960s when it retreated from economic activity and declined in population. Today, Elizabethton is a small rural community with a few hundred residents that relies heavily on agriculture for income.
