Elizabethton is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson–Murfreesboro–Carlisle, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elizabethton is home to the Elizabethton Museum and History Complex. The community was founded in 1855 by two brothers, James and John Witherspoon. They named their town after their mother's birthplace in England—Elizabethtown, Virginia. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant visited Elizabethton while on his way to victory over Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. Grant called the town "a very beautiful place" and noted that it would be an excellent location for a military post because its geography made it difficult for Confederate forces to attack from both sides of the county line. The Grants built a log cabin near what is now the south side of Main Street and lived there until they sold it to settlers in 1868. In 1870-71, local farmers organized what became known as the "First Settlers' Association," which purchased land north of present-day Main Street from William Pickett and others for $1 per acre (later raised to $5). This land had been used by Native American people as hunting ground and burial sites since before European settlement began; however, no one had ever attempted to settle there until this group did so out of concern about Indian raids into adjacent counties during the early 1800s. The association cleared off most of this land and laid out streets and houses on it between 1871-75 using plans provided by architect Ezra Bassett Price Jr.. Price designed these buildings withcolonial Georgian features including single storey Ionic columns topped by pedimented roofs crowned with conical spires orTammany Town Halls were also erected hereabouts Outbuildings included barns, chicken coops (now barbecue restaurants), three smokehouses/smokehouses (now homes), six cotton ginners (now residences), four sawmills (now businesses), two water wheels (now residences) – all still extant today – as well as fifteen gardens providing comfortable living quarters for up to sixty residents each when complete On October 15th 1865 George Rogers Clark signed an act creating Hardin County effective November 1st 1865 The first school was built in 1876 just across from where now Elm Street crosses Main Street A post office opened here on December 3rd ,1876 In 1907 a transformer station was built just east of present day Elm street along Electric Avenue

Elizabethton, Tennessee is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson metropolitan area. Elizabethton was founded in 1872 by John Witherspoon and his family as a cotton gin and lumberyard town on the Cumberland River. The first store in Elizabethton was built by Witherspoon's father-in-law, James A. Keneally. Other early businesses included a millinery shop and an agricultural store. The first school was taught in a log cabin on what is now Main Street by Mrs. Sarah Pritchard until 1870 when she moved to the present building on West Main Street which has been used for school since 1871. In 1876, Jeptha Hargrave donated land to build the first courthouse in Hardin County and Jane White donated money to add another room to that structure two years later. The first post office opened in Elizabethton on April 15, 1875 under the name of Hintonville; it changed its name to Elizabethton on November 7th of that year after Senator John Coker offered sponsorship for that name change through the US Senate Committee on Territories and Insular Affairs In 1886, George Washington Dixon donated land along High street for a new public square which became known as Dixon Square after him In 1924, Mrs. Lillie Mae Morse invited President Franklin D Roosevelt to come Visit her hometown during his fourth term as president After World War II began with Japanese internment camps being established throughout America (Elizabethton had one), many people fromElizabethton supported American forces who were fighting against Japan while others fled into exile In 1951 local resident Rubin "Bunny" Brown helped found Knoxville's First Baptist Church which still operates today On July 5th of that year rains flooded many homes leaving much damage but no dead or injured
Elizabethton, Tennessee is the most recent town in Elizabethton County, Tennessee to be founded. The first settler in Elizabethton was John Cane in 1819.
