It is interesting to think about the history of magazines in Elizabethton, Tennessee. At one time, it was a small town located on the edge of a farm that was used for hunting and fishing. The town was founded in 1836 by Colonel John C. Shelby, who also owned land around it. The first store in Elizabethton opened its doors in 1837 and functioned as a post office until 1861. However, it is likely that the first magazine in Elizabethton came into being very soon after this. In 1846, Nathaniel Fenton opened a printing shop inElizabethton and began printing firearms magazines called "The Tennessean". This magazine continued to be published until 1865 when it merged with another magazine called the " Louisville Courier-Journal". In 1870, Colonel Shelby sold his land to J.H. Ladd and Wm. Hargrave for $2,500 dollars which allowed them to build an addition to their store which became known as the "Ladd House." It would remain here through most of the years that followed before being torn down in 1916 due to fire damage. It is still unknown how many magazines were printed at this address but it is safe to say that they were quite numerous given how popular pistols and rifles were at this time! By 1930, only two newspapers remained within what had become known asthe "Old South" - The Tennessean (now the Knoxville News Sentinel)and The Courier Journal (now Kentucky Union). Throughout much of the late 1800s and early 1900s there was significant growth within both publications but both eventually ceased operations due eitherto economic problems or changing trends within society overall! Although these publications may have been gone for awhile after their heyday however their influence can still be felt today throughout Elizabethton!
