Elizabethton was founded in 1814 by General James Shields and his family as a post office called "Shieldsville". It became known as Elizabethton because of an Indian attack on the town in 1815 that left five people dead and several wounded. Elizabethton has a history rich in military and civil conflict. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down Union army camps near Elizabethton while Union troops were encamped nearby. In 1861, after Confederate forces attacked Fort Donelson outside of Knoxville, Union soldiers burned down two homes in Elizabethton to prevent local civilians from helping the Confederacy. The Confederates had also destroyed most of the town's infrastructure including its water system and schools before retreating northward. During World War II, manyElizabethTON residents served in the United States Army or Navy; some even went to war as officers themselves. Many veterans still live in the community today and continue their traditions of service through organizations such as 4-H Clubs and Habitat for Humanity

Elizabethton is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,831 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elizabethton is named after General James Wilkinson and his wife Sarah Elizabeth (1772-1847), who were merchants and landowners in the area. The first Europeans to inhabit what is now Hardin County were the Shawnees, who arrived in 1796. In 1802, John Sevier became the first white settler in what is now Elizabethton when he purchased 4 acres of land from Jacob King. A few years later, George Washington Barrow and Hugh Blair settled in what are now Elizabethton as well. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson was elected president and moved his headquarters from New York City to Chattanooga; this led to increased trade between Tennessee and Georgia due toJackson's military efforts there. In 1821, Samuel Ladd organized a wagon train that transported goods from Logansport, Indiana overland to Chattanooga on their way to Mound Valley Races at Lookout Mountain National Park near Knoxville. The event attracted many passengers and animals because it was one of only two times per year that wagons could cross the mountains without being stopped by snowdrifts or other obstacles. In 1825, William Hogg opened a grocery store in Elizabethton which soon became a major Commerce Street store serving much of Hardin County includingElizabethton itself as well as nearby towns such as Carthage and Welchsboro just south of present day Elizabethton proper on Highway 129A (later State Route 2). The store continued operation until it burned down in 1903 during an economic depression caused by railroad construction acrossHardin County at that time combined with general deflation throughout much of the country following America's peak gold rush frenzy years earlier those same decade which had created huge new wealth for many Americans but also destroyed most traditional ways of life across much of North America resulting particularly among rural people whose livelihoods had been based largely on agriculture or manufacturing those activities along with their families within close knit villages/townships etc.) . By 1901 almost every business closed within any 10 miles radius either downtown or outside of town limits since then Roads have been built connecting all these settlements making it easier today even though not all residents still lived within walking distance back then) .
