Elizabethton is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,633 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Elizabethton was founded in 1819 by Captain John Caldwell and his family. The village was named for Elizabeth Caldwell, wife of Colonel James Caldwell, one of the original settlers in Hardin County. The first post office in Elizabethton was established on November 3, 1821. At that time it served onlyHardin County. On October 9, 1826, the first town meeting in Elizabethton were held to discuss forming a township with a population of 20 people under the direction of Mayor James Rheapler and Trustees David Robertson and Phebe Goodlett. A second meeting was held on December 5th to consider annexing land east of US Highway 231 to form a new township with an additional population of 30 people; this idea also failed when noone offered financial support for the incorporation effort). In 1829 Captain John Caldwell donated land to build a school which would serve as a model for future schools across the stateline (later renamed Central High School). Mrs. Caldwell also donated money towards building another school which would be used as an elementary school until it burned down in 1865; this structure still stands today as Margaret Skelley Elementary School (named after Mrs. Caldwell’s daughter). In 1830-31 Captains John Caldwell and George Bird donated logs for an addition to their home that served as a library/schoolhouse/civic center until it burned down in 1901; that structure still stands today as Heritage Hall Library (). In 1832 Captains John Caldwell and Jonathan Bird donated land east of US 231 for what would become known as Park Avenue Cemetery (); that property still remains today within city limits (). After much consideration both ideas were abandoned because there did not seem enough interest from anyone involved (although efforts continued thereafter by various means including letter writing). As noted earlier most or all development took place outside of downtown Elizabethton while some activities such as education or trade took place inside downtown between storerooms or other makeshift structures during times when larger buildings weren't available or when more formal meetings could be convened outdoors within city walls (which later became Municipal Hall ). For many years Lieutenant Governor Jeptha Meeks presided over courts martial hearings located inside Municipal Hall due primarily to its convenient location next door and its ample number of seats drawn from municipal citizens who had special access to those proceedings since they constituted juries . The recent construction project funded by private donations has re-opened Municipal Hall – now called State Courts - inside City Limits providing law enforcement services unavailable from inside MunicipalHall . After World War II, Elizabethton experienced rapid growth thanks to its location within commuting distance of Nashville and Chattanooga. Today, Elizabethton is a vibrant community with a strong cultural heritage that has helped it become one of the fastest growing cities in Tennessee.
